They’ll bless you for it.’Ī child who can’t touch type will produce work at less than half the speed of a child who can knowing that, why wouldn’t you want to give your child that advantage? More and more senior schools are looking for pupils with keyboarding skills already established. John Sutherland, professor of English literature at University College, says, ‘You want to put wings on the heels of your children? Teach them to touch-type. Children who can type have an advantage over their peers If you keep switching between looking at the keyboard and the screen, you’re wasting half your time because your brain is trying to focus on two different things at once. – It’s a different, effective way to spell words are finger movements and patterns on the keyboard not strings of letters – Your mind is free to concentrate on content and quality of writing – Keep your eyes on the screen, no dividing of the attention between the screen and the keyboard There are so many advantages to this part of the brain being in control, for example… This part of the brain automates processes, operations and skills, so that once learned, the process part is unconscious. It really is “let your fingers do the talking”. What’s in control is the “cerebellum” also known as your kinaesthetic (or physical) skill centre, or you may have heard the term “muscle memory” (it’s not actually in your muscles!). When you can type without looking down at the keyboard, your unconscious is in control of what’s happening (it’s like changing gear in a car – you think it and your body does the rest). When you type by touch, a different part of your brain is in control Let’s look at the reasons why every child should learn the art of “keyboarding”. In fact, it could be one of the most valuable skills your primary school child will ever learn. But as computers have become an essential in most areas of life – school, work, home – the most inefficient part is usually the human / computer interface – the keyboard. Touch-typing is one of those skills that has been over looked or gone out of fashion. I got in touch with Sue from Englishtype to discover the benefits Why teach your child to touchtype? None of my older 3 children ever learnt to properly touch type but I recently read that 7 or 8 is a good time to learn so I want to test that out with my fourth child this Summer. It is very possible that handwritten exams will be phased out in the next few years. They don't have a ton of camber underfoot. So that really gives me confidence that this would be an amazing ski in the powder, and it would float very well in any snow depth. The horizon tech on the tip, which is specific to Atomic, gives the ski 10% more surface area on the tip. On the Atomic Bent Chetler 120 this year, we have a 30% rocker at the tip, 40% camber underfoot, and 30% at the tail. Not when it's kind of cruddy and messed up. Definitely no conditions that are going to be hard underfoot. They're very light, which is awesome, but they are definitely not something I would take in anything but champagne. But that being said, these are wicked soft fast skis. So they're definitely a stiffer, more aggressive ski compared to the 100. And I just got off the Bent Chetler 120 and a 184, and significant improvement in edge hold from the 100s for sure. One is that they are extremely light for what they are, and the softness to some degree comes with that, but that, combined with the really generous rocker profile, means they're really maneuverable. So there are a couple of things that I find distinctive about these from other skis in the class. That being said, I think it's really important to ski skis outside of what they're recommended for just to see what they can do. But my first impressions are that this is a ski that would do really, really well in deep snow and was not meant for the conditions I'm skiing in today. So I'm going to extrapolate a little bit based on my experience with similar skis in the past. I just want to preface this review by saying I did not ski this in ideal conditions. It has great edge hold, especially on the firmer groomers as well. I had an awesome time out there on this ski. I had fun on groomers, catching air, almost everything in between, and surfed a couple of inches of powder as well. I was on the 100 and the 110 this week, and I was quite surprised by how much backbone this thing has compared to both skis. What is your overall impression of the ski? Lithium ions intercalate between the layers upon discharging, remaining between the lattice planes until the battery gets charged, at which point the lithium de-intercalates and moves to the anode. NMC materials have layered structures similar to the individual metal oxide compounds lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO 2) and lithium manganese oxide (LiMn 2O 4). Lithium ions can move in and out between the layers. Displacing nickel from the layered structure can alter the material's bonding characteristics, forming undesirable phases and lowering its capacity. The similar size of Ni 2+ (0.69 Å) and Li + (0.76 Å) facilitates cation mixing. Cation mixing, a process in which Li + substitutes Ni 2+ ions in the lattice, increases as nickel concentration increases as well. Higher nickel content decreases the oxygen generation temperature while also increasing the heat generation during battery operation. Oxygen can generate from the metal oxide at 300☌ when fully discharged, degrading the lattice. Increasing cobalt content comes at the cost of replacing either higher-energy nickel or chemically stable manganese while also being expensive. Most notably, increasing the nickel content in NMC increases its initial discharge capacity, but lowers its thermal stability and capacity retention. Modifying the transition metal stoichiometry changes the material's properties, providing a way to adjust cathode performance. Cobalt and nickel oxidize partially to Co 4+ and Ni 4+ during charging, while Mn 4+ remains inactive and maintains structural stability. įor NMC111, the ideal oxidation states for charge distribution are Mn 4+, Co 3+, and Ni 2+. The general lithium content typically remains around 1:1 with the total transition metal content, with commercial NMC samples usually containing less than 5% excess lithium. Other common compositions are NMC622 and NMC811. A composition of 50% nickel, 30% manganese, and 20% cobalt would be called NMC532 (or NCM523) and have the formula LiNi 0.5Mn 0.3Co 0.2O 2. For example, an NMC molar composition of 33% nickel, 33% manganese, and 33% cobalt would abbreviate to NMC111 (also NMC333 or NCM333) and have a chemical formula of LiNi 0.33Mn 0.33Co 0.33O 2. Three numbers immediately following the NMC abbreviation indicate the relative stoichiometry of the three defining metals. Points in a solid solution phase diagram between the end members LiCoO 2, LiMnO 2, and LiNiO 2 represent stoichiometric NMC cathodes. Furthermore, an increased nickel content provides more capacity within the stable operation window. Reducing the cobalt content in NMC is also a current target, owing to ethical issues with cobalt mining and the metal's high cost. There is a particular interest in optimizing NMC for electric vehicle applications because of the material's high energy density and operating voltage. Lithium ions intercalate into the cathode or anode during charging and discharging. A general schematic of a lithium-ion battery. This Stuffed Acorn Squash is the perfect dish to try next!Įditor's note: This recipe was update to add a video and more information about the dish in the introduction on August 8th, 2022. A fork should be able to easily pierce the squash and shred it. Place your squash on a large baking sheet or in a baking dish, cut side up. For sweet, brush it with softened butter and sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon all over it. For savory, drizzle it with some olive oil and sprinkle paprika or curry powder over it with some salt and pepper. Leave the skin on and cut into half moon slices or peel the skin off and cut into large cubes!Ĭhoose if you would rather go the sweet or savory route with your acorn squash. At this point you can also cut the squash further if you don't want to serve them in halves. Don't toss the seeds, though! Just like you can with pumpkin, clean them off and roast the seeds for a perfect little snack. Bake at 400F for about 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes, until the tops of the squash halves are nicely browned and the squash flesh is very soft and cooked. Cut the squash in half lengthwise, cutting through where the stem used to be.Īfter you have your squash open, use a spoon to scrape out the seeds. Two halves can even fit into a toaster oven. This will make a flat surface for it to stand on instead of dangerously rolling around on your cutting board. The simplest and probably the best thing to do with acorn squash it to split in half, scoop out the seeds, drizzle it with maple syrup or sprinkle with brown sugar, and add a pat of butter and a sprinkling of salt and bake. Bake in the preheated oven until flesh begins to soften, about 30 to 45 minutes. Place acorn squash halves cut-side down onto a cookie sheet. To make it easier, cut the stem off and place squash cut side down on your cutting board. Dotdash Meredith Food Studios Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). The flesh also separates from the skin easily after roasting so if you don't prefer the skin it will be easier to separate after cooking. After roasting, the skin on the squash will be soft and edible so there's no need to worry about peeling it first. It can be dressed up either savory or sweet and served as individual halves for the cutest presentation. The squash is healthy and full of fiber plus, its size makes it far easier to cut open and work with. Both are great, but acorn squash would like to be noticed as well. Make sure to add water on the baking sheet to avoid making the squash too dry. When it comes to winter squash we usually focus on butternut squash and pumpkin. If you love, like us, scooping up the tender flesh from the halved squash with the spoon, you will have to increase the temperature to reduce the cooking time. Rings and slices will bake faster than halves. First one, by cutting it to smaller pieces. You can speed up acorn squash cooking in two ways. How to cook acorn squash in the oven fast? Turn the oven broiler on and place the squash in the oven for another 10 minutes. After 40 minutes, remove the squash from oven and add a slice of butter and some honey. Place the squash on a baking sheet cut side up and roast it for 40 minutes at 350 degrees. We also rub the skin of the squash with sugar and butter since it gets soft and edible after baking. For sweet squash, brush it with butter and brown sugar. For savory, sprinkle on it some olive oil, season it with salt, pepper and a fancy spice, such as paprika or curry powder. Now it’s time to decide whether your acorn squash will be a dessert or a savory meal.As the center is clean, cut the squash to smaller pieces if you dislike halves. There is nothing simpler than using the microwave to cook healthy food that tastes great. Discard the seeds and strings by scraping them out with a spoon. To make the job easier, cut the stem off first, then run the knife along the length of the squash through where the stem was. Here’s the recipe to cook acorn squash in the oven. Not the best news for your hungry family and guests. While 300 degrees is also a great option, you will have to wait over an hour for the squash to get tender. At this temperature, you get more control over the process with more chance to make adjustments to prevent the squash from going too brown and dry. However, we recommend you to cook the acorn squash in the oven at 350 degrees instead. Well, the squash may get ready faster at 425 and 450 degrees.
